A man from North Korea has made a rare direct crossing through the heavily guarded DMZ into South Korea. Most defectors usually choose a different, more circuitous route through China and other countries. This was reported by the publication 'Glavkom' citing DW.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in Seoul, a civilian from North Korea crossed the mined border with the help of South Korean soldiers after a 20-hour operation on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Events at the Border

The man was detected by military reconnaissance equipment between 3 and 4 a.m. on Thursday near a stream in the DMZ. He kept still for a long time to avoid detection during the day. That night, South Korean troops found him near the military demarcation line and conducted an arrest operation.

In post-war relations between North and South Korea, this is a very significant stage, as it may lead to an improvement in relations between the two countries and a path toward further demilitarization of the border and restoration of international relations.
