Drone Debris Resembling Russian 'Shahed' Model Found Near Ukrainian Border

Залишки безпілотника, що нагадують модель Шахед, виявлені поблизу кордону з Україною.

Drone Incident in Moldova

Moldovan border guards have discovered the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle, similar to the Russian-made 'Shahed' drone, close to the border with Ukraine. The discovery was made on March 17 in a field near the village of Tudora, located just 500 meters from the Moldovan-Ukrainian frontier. This find follows a confirmed airspace violation by a drone flying at an altitude of roughly 150 meters toward the village of Căplani. The distance between Căplani and Tudora is approximately 13 kilometers. Moldova, a neutral state, has faced increasing security challenges due to its proximity to the war in Ukraine.

Moldovan law enforcement is currently investigating the incident. The debris found in the field is suspected to belong to a Russian 'Shahed'-type kamikaze drone. The village of Tudora is situated near the town of Palanca, which hosts the only land route connecting to the southern districts of Ukraine's Odesa region.

Moldova's Response to the Incident

In connection with this event, Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian Ambassador, Oleg Ozerov, and presented him with a protest note. This diplomatic action was related to a separate Russian strike that caused a spill of petroleum products into the Dniester River. The Moldovan side continues to monitor the regional situation and respond to threats arising in its national airspace.

This incident underscores the rising regional tensions as Moldova strives to safeguard its security amidst the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The discovery of the drone wreckage points to potential airspace violations that could pose a threat to both Moldova and neighboring Ukraine. The response from Moldovan authorities demonstrates their readiness to defend the country's sovereignty and security. This event may also impact diplomatic relations between Moldova and Russia within the context of the current regional situation.
