Restrictions Imposed on Ukraine’s Starshield Military Network
The White House has ordered a slowdown in the military-grade version of Starlink, known as Starshield, which is used by Ukraine. This directive, issued to the U.S. Department of Defense, has hindered Ukrainian forces’ ability to strike Russian troops and logistics in occupied zones. Notably, the limitations have affected interceptor drones deployed to neutralize Russian "Shahed" drones.
Starshield, developed by SpaceX specifically for government and security clients, remains under U.S. government control. Elon Musk confirmed this, stating:
“Starshield is governed by the U.S. government, so any restrictions come from the military or the president.”
The Pentagon is the primary customer of this service, with Ukrainian terminals operating at speeds up to 160 km/h.
Tensions Rise Between Kyiv and Washington
Relations between Kyiv and Washington have deteriorated following an October 9 meeting in Miami involving representatives from Ukraine, the U.S., Europe, and the World Bank. Jared Kushner, former President Trump’s son-in-law, and special envoy Steve Witkoff expressed U.S. frustration over Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian oil refineries. The American delegation also disclosed a diesel agreement with Russia, potentially softening Moscow’s stance in peace talks.
Additionally, U.S. officials threatened to halt intelligence sharing on Russian missile launches with Kyiv, although Donald Trump claims the U.S. continues to provide this data. Meanwhile, fuel prices have surged, a development experts link to the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Israel with Iran, which resulted in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This price hike is seen as a factor influencing Republican prospects in the upcoming November midterm elections.
The new Starshield restrictions could significantly diminish the Ukrainian military’s operational capabilities against Russian forces. They also highlight escalating strains in U.S.-Ukraine relations that may complicate future American military aid. Given rising fuel costs and shifting political dynamics, these developments bear close watching as they could affect U.S. foreign policy toward Ukraine and Russia.
As tensions escalate, the U.S. has urged Ukraine to cease its strikes on Russian oil facilities, a move that could impact ongoing military operations. This demand comes amid rising concerns regarding the effectiveness of Ukraine's attacks, especially in light of recent restrictions on military support.
