The Director of the Department of Civil Protection and Preventive Activities of the Emergency Service, Viktor Vitovetsky, noted during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine that most fires during the holiday season occur due to human negligence and non-compliance with fire safety rules.
According to statistics, since the beginning of 2025, there have been more than 22.6 thousand fires in the residential sector, of which more than 7 thousand are due to careless handling of fire and over 6.9 thousand due to emergency modes of operation in the power grid. As a result of these fires, more than 1.2 thousand people died, including 44 children.
Main fire safety rules
- Place the Christmas tree on a stable base, away from heating devices and evacuation routes.
- Only use certified factory-produced garlands for decoration; if there is sparking, heating, or smell of melted insulation, they should be turned off immediately.
- It is forbidden to use candles, sparklers, and easily flammable decorations.
