An Invisible Health Threat

A chemical commonly used in plastic packaging production may contribute to diabetes, warn researchers.

A recent randomized clinical trial has revealed that bisphenol A (BPA), a compound widely utilized since the 1960s in manufacturing plastic containers and food packaging, can reduce the body's responsiveness to insulin. This study involved 40 healthy volunteers in a double-blind setup lasting five days, where participants received either a placebo or a dose of BPA below the lifetime exposure limit deemed "safe" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The findings showed a 9% decrease in peripheral insulin sensitivity among those exposed to BPA, while the placebo group experienced a slight improvement. Scientists from California Polytechnic State University and Rutgers University led the research. Prior connections between BPA and metabolic disorders were mostly observed in animal experiments or through epidemiological data.

Despite these new insights, U.S. safety regulations regarding BPA have not been updated for over a decade.
