Wartime Support from Ukraine's Largest Businesses
Rinat Akhmetov's business group is playing a major role in Ukraine's defense and humanitarian response. Through its key companies and foundations, it provides extensive aid to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), supports the defenders of Mariupol and their families, assists veterans, funds educational development, aids civilians and communities, and runs memorial and advocacy projects. SCM, Metinvest, DTEK, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, and FC Shakhtar are all implementing numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing security and meeting the urgent needs of Ukrainians during the ongoing conflict.
Specific Aid and Infrastructure Projects
Metinvest, for instance, has designed and delivered over 900 steel bunkers to frontline troops. These structures have formed the basis for two underground hospitals operating to NATO standards, giving military medics the facilities they need to treat the wounded. DTEK has also made a significant contribution by supplying free electricity to more than 100 critical infrastructure sites in the Kyiv, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The company's engineers have restored power to over 26 million homes in areas affected by fighting.
Since the full-scale invasion began, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has distributed 700,000 units of medicine. Furthermore, it has provided over 13 million food packages since 2014. Rinat Akhmetov has allocated approximately 2.2 billion hryvnias for the 'Heart of Azovstal' project. The foundation plans to provide 100 apartments to Mariupol defenders by 2026, with a total of 400 apartments to be awarded to service members over three years.
This wide-ranging support demonstrates the critical role major Ukrainian businesses are playing in the nation's resilience. By actively backing both the military and civilians, Akhmetov's enterprises are executing vital social projects that save lives and improve living conditions during wartime. This activity not only provides direct assistance but also highlights the social responsibility of business in a crisis, which is a key factor for the stability of Ukrainian society and its economy.
