Refusing to Euthanize His 19-Year-Old Diabetic Cat: A Ukrainian National Guard Soldier’s Fight for His Pet’s Life

Відмова від евтаназії свого 19-річного діабетичного кота: боротьба солдата Національної гвардії України за збереження життя свого улюбленця.

A Story of Loyalty Between a Soldier and His Cat

A Ukrainian National Guard aerial reconnaissance operator, call sign 'Dykyi' (Wild), cares for his 19-year-old cat, who has survived two direct strikes on their home. Despite the severe hardships they have faced, the soldier continues fighting for his pet’s life, even as veterinarians repeatedly recommended euthanasia. The cat, who has had diabetes for seven years, also lived through a heart attack and a stroke—yet his owner refuses to give up on him.

After two strikes hit their house, the soldier evacuated the cat. Since then, they have moved together across ten different rental apartments. Dykyi notes that despite all the adversity, his cat still shows a strong will to live.

'Five times now, vets—professionals—have told me to put him down. I always asked one thing: if he’s in constant pain, I’ll do it. But if there’s a way out... They said: You’d have to give him two injections a day for the rest of his life. Can you do that? I said: Is that all it takes for him to live? Let’s go!' the soldier shares.

Caring for the cat, Dykyi administers two insulin injections daily—a commitment he made for his friend. 'I watch how he lives. He wants to live,' he emphasizes. The cat has become a symbol of fighting for life, inspiring not only his owner but also many Ukrainians following their story.
