The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is taking decisive steps to ensure the integrity of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo by establishing the Joint Integrity Unit (JIU). This new body is designed to prevent potential violations, primarily match-fixing. This was reported by 'Glavkom' citing the IOC's website.

The JIU will actively operate from January 30 to February 24, 2026, covering the period from the opening to the closing of the Olympic villages. The main focus will be on preventing match-fixing and detecting suspicious activity in betting shops.

The unit uses an extensive international network for the prompt detection of bets, including those made by accredited individuals.

Advanced analytical tools and expert knowledge will be employed, including the involvement of intergovernmental organizations such as Interpol. The JIU will ensure close collaboration between the IOC, the Olympic organizing committee, Italian authorities, and law enforcement. Bookmakers and the IOC's network of single contact points in international sports federations will also participate in monitoring.

Similar systems have been successfully implemented by the IOC at all Games since the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

The XXV Winter Olympic Games will take place in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo from February 6 to February 22, 2026.

Earlier, a ceremonial event was held in ancient Olympia, Greece, to light the Olympic flame for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Due to gloomy weather, the ceremony took place at the Archaeological Museum instead of the ancient stadium. The event was attended by the President of the International Olympic Committee Kirsty Coventry and the President of Greece Konstantinos Tasoulas.

The IOC has created a special unit to ensure the integrity of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, which will actively work to prevent violations and match-fixing. The organization will utilize an international network to detect suspicious activity and will ensure close collaboration with other bodies to guarantee integrity and tranquility during the Olympics.
