Ukrainian siblings shine on the global stage
On July 26, in Porto, Portugal, two young Ukrainians emerged as winners at the International Mental Arithmetic Olympiad. The competition drew young participants from 14 countries, but siblings Nicole Kovalenko, age 7, and Alexander Kovalenko, age 10, attracted the most attention. They currently live and attend school in Ireland, and their international success has become a point of pride for the Ukrainian community.
The Kovalenkos' growing list of accomplishments
Alexander Kovalenko first took third place at a Ukrainian online olympiad and later repeated that finish in international competition. Yet his run did not end there:
- He went on to win the Ukrainian olympiad.
- He claimed first place at the international mental arithmetic olympiad.
Nicole, making her debut at an international online olympiad, finished in the top ten. At the next Ukrainian olympiad, she also took first place.
Both children are coached by the same instructor, who has prepared more than one winner of international competitions. One of her pupils is her own daughter, who has been a world champion in mental arithmetic and competitive memorization.
The Kovalenkos' victory highlights not just their intellectual talent, but also the accomplishments of Ukrainian children on the international stage, helping to spread interest in mental arithmetic in Ukraine and beyond.
The achievements of Nicole and Alexander Kovalenko demonstrate the potential of Ukrainian youth worldwide and point to the value of mental arithmetic as a tool for strengthening cognitive skills. Their story may inspire more children in Ukraine to take up the discipline, which could benefit education in the country. It is important for such stories to encourage young people to join competitions and expand their opportunities. Mental arithmetic is a calculation method often used as a brain-training exercise for children.
The success of the Kovalenko siblings is a testament to the growing recognition of Ukrainian talent in various fields. Their remarkable achievements in mental arithmetic echo the recent triumph of another young Ukrainian, who excelled at an international robotics competition in South Korea. This highlights a broader trend of Ukrainian youth making their mark on the global stage. To learn more about this inspiring story, visit Ukrainian schoolgirl's victory in robotics.
