The United Kingdom has introduced three refugee resettlement routes through communities, universities, and employers, separate from visa programs for Ukrainians. In the first phase, they will cover people seeking protection in seven designated countries. This is reported by the UK government.

Refugee programs in Britain: what routes were introduced in 2026

The new model involves the participation of accredited charities and community organizations. They will coordinate sponsors, verify support conditions, and assist in resettlement.

Three directions are envisaged:

  • Community sponsorship: local groups will be able to identify refugees they are willing to accept, help them with housing and adaptation.

  • Education: universities will invite refugees to educational programs involving specialized organizations.

  • Employment: employers will offer jobs and support the relocation of selected candidates.

Decisions on admission to the country will be made by the UK Home Office. Having a sponsor does not replace identity checks, compliance with program conditions, and security requirements.

The new routes have their own support system. Their conditions should not be transferred to Homes for Ukraine, where separate changes are being made to host payments for shelter.

Relocating to Britain: who meets the conditions of the new programs

Initially, the routes will operate in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Egypt, Uganda, and Kenya. Candidates must be outside their country of citizenship and meet international protection requirements.

Two time conditions are specified: a person must have been in the country of the route's operation and must be registered with the appropriate authorities or UNHCR by October 1, 2026. The specifics of applying the registration requirement will be clarified by the government for individual states.

For Ukrainians, citizenship is not the only decisive factor. Simply living in Ukraine, Poland, or another European country is not enough to participate in the first phase. It is also insufficient just to relocate now to one of the seven listed countries, as the deadline has already passed.

Upon arrival, participants will receive an initial permit to stay for five years. This is not a guarantee of permanent residence after five years: the official guidelines provide a pathway to such status, but detailed conditions will be published by the government later.

The announcement of the programs does not mean an immediate opening of relocation for all candidates. Before planning a trip, one must check the availability of a specific route and obtain permission. For Ukrainians already residing in the country, separate document processing in London is available.
