UK Announces New Military Aid Package for Ukraine
The United Kingdom has unveiled a fresh military assistance package for Ukraine valued at £852 million. The aid includes hundreds of surface-to-air missiles, thousands of drones, and advanced radar systems. UK Defence Minister Dan Jarvis disclosed the details during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group held in the Ramstein format.
What the Package Contains
The assistance will consist of:
- 150,000 Ukrainian-made drones
- 350 air defense missiles
- Modern radar systems
Funding for this package was made possible through a special loan mechanism that leverages frozen Russian assets. This approach marks a novel method of financing Kyiv's defense needs.
Dan Jarvis: 'We now have a limited window of opportunity. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have the momentum on the battlefield and are fighting with extraordinary dedication. They are counting on our support.'
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also stressed the urgent need to provide Ukraine with air defense systems and Patriot interceptor missiles during the Alliance's July summit in Ankara.
This latest UK military aid package is part of broader international efforts to bolster Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. The increased focus on air defense capabilities reflects the most pressing requirements of Ukraine's military to safeguard against aerial threats. Using frozen Russian assets to fund the aid signals a shift in how Western partners approach support for Ukraine, potentially setting a precedent for other nations.
