UK removal figures: key numbers

The Home Office has recorded its highest deportation tally since 2016. More than 80,000 individuals have been removed from the country since the 2024 general election — a 52% jump compared with the two years preceding the vote. Those sent away include foreign criminals, people who broke immigration rules, and individuals who were staying in the UK without legal status. Immigration has been a major political flashpoint in the UK, especially around Channel crossings by small boats.

Breakdown of removals

In more detail:

  • 24,471 removals were connected to asylum procedures;
  • 6,103 deported migrants had arrived on small boats;
  • 11,733 of those removed were foreign offenders.
'People who come to the UK legally and want to build a better life will always be welcome. But arriving illegally or violating our laws means you will be sent home.' Shabana Mahmood, UK Home Secretary

Mahmood added: 'I know much more work remains. That is why we are pushing for new laws to speed up the removal of people who are here without permission.' These efforts form part of a new three-year arrangement between the UK and France designed to discourage illegal migration flows.

The rising removal rate shows a tougher UK immigration stance and a government drive to curb unauthorized migration. With the new French deal prioritizing faster removals, British authorities appear focused on easing pressure on the asylum system and strengthening domestic security. It could also affect international relations, especially cooperation with neighboring countries on migration policy.

The recent surge in deportations in the UK mirrors trends observed in other European nations, where immigration policies are becoming increasingly stringent. For instance, Poland has also seen a significant rise in expulsions, with a notable number of Ukrainians among those affected. This broader context highlights the shifting landscape of immigration enforcement across Europe, making it essential for readers to understand the implications of these developments.
