Manston Airport’s Transformation Plans

Manston Airport, situated near Ramsgate in Kent, is slated for redevelopment into a major international aviation hub. The proposal from RiverOak Strategic Partners Ltd (RSP) involves a project valued between £500 million and £750 million. However, the initiative has encountered a significant hurdle: in May, Ramsgate Town Council raised concerns about potential changes to flight paths, which could lead to increased noise levels and adverse health effects for local residents.

Manston Airport boasts the 11th longest civilian runway in the UK but has been inactive since 2014. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the site was repurposed as a truck park. RSP has been pursuing this project since 2019 and aims to launch commercial flights by 2029. Construction was initially scheduled to begin early next year.

Forecasts and Concerns

Projections indicate the airport could handle up to 14,000 aircraft movements annually by 2038, equating to roughly 38 flights per day. Yet, Ramsgate Town Council has highlighted potential health risks from aviation noise, including:

  • sleep disturbances,
  • elevated risk of stroke and heart attacks,
  • a possible link to dementia.

The applicant estimates that noise-related health costs could exceed £20.8 million over a decade.

Tony Freudmann, director of RSP: 'To provide any feedback they may have to help shape our plans.'

However, Ramsgate Town Council has stated that such consultations are insufficient for a project of this scale. Steve Albon, a council representative, emphasized: 'Ramsgate Town Council recognizes the importance of this issue to residents and is committed to ensuring a clear and professional representation of local concerns.'

As a result, the situation surrounding Manston Airport remains tense, with the future of the site and its impact on the local community requiring further deliberation and consideration of all feedback.

The plan to revive Manston Airport reflects efforts to bring the facility back into active use and enhance regional infrastructure. However, given residents’ worries about health and environmental consequences, it is crucial for all parties to collaborate actively to reach a compromise. Open dialogue and community involvement may be key to resolving these issues and ensuring a safe, comfortable environment for the people of Ramsgate.
