Passing of British Paratrooper George Gully
British paratrooper George Gully succumbed to severe injuries three days after an explosion on December 6, 2025, in Ukraine. The incident, which occurred far from the front lines, happened during trials of new defense capabilities. Senior coroner Darren Salter of Oxfordshire confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Gully's death, though the exact cause of the blast remains unclear.
Gully died on December 9, 2025, in a medical facility in Kyiv following the injuries he sustained. According to Sky News, his death was not the result of enemy fire. He joined the British Army in November 2015, serving in the Parachute Regiment with deployments to Afghanistan, Africa, and Eastern Europe. He was due to be promoted to corporal in January 2026 and would have turned 29 on February 12, 2026.
Military Career and Dedication
In October 2020, George Gully graduated with distinction from the Parachute Regiment’s junior non-commissioned officers course and earned the rank of junior corporal. The UK Ministry of Defence praised his military capabilities, describing him as an "exceptional soldier and impressive junior leader with extensive operational experience." This marks the first publicly confirmed death of a British servicemember in Ukraine since February 2022.
Gully’s death is a profound loss for his family, comrades, and everyone who knew him. His commitment and service will be remembered by those close to him.
The fatal incident highlights the inherent risks faced by military personnel even when operating away from active combat zones. The circumstances of Gully’s injury may prompt a review of safety protocols and training methods during military trials. Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, ensuring the safety of international forces supporting the Ukrainian military remains a critical concern.
