'Happy Vyshyvanka Day! Let us protect what is ours!'
Celebrations and Initiatives
World Vyshyvanka Day is observed on the third Thursday of May. What began as a student initiative has grown into a widely celebrated occasion among Ukrainians. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska also joined in the greetings, congratulating Ukrainians on this important day.
In Kyiv, as part of the festivities, the bronze statues of the city’s legendary founding children on Poshtova Square were dressed in vyshyvankas, while municipal workers decorated the capital’s parks with flower beds shaped like patriotic patterns. The civic organization 'Defense of the State' launched a campaign to have Vyshyvanka Day officially recognized as a state holiday. The group is collecting signatures for a petition to the Verkhovna Rada across all regions of Ukraine, aiming to cement the holiday at the national level.
Nadiya Vakulenko, a Honored Master of Folk Art and head of the All-Ukrainian Center for Embroidery and Carpet Weaving, gave an interview to the publication 'Glavkom' in which she highlighted the vyshyvanka’s importance in Ukrainian culture. She noted, among other things, that every president of Ukraine owns a Reshetylivka-style shirt—embroidered white-on-white. This garment was also worn by Khrushchev, and its popularity is underscored by the fact that a Reshetylivka shirt was gifted to Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and to actress Sophia Loren.
The celebration of World Vyshyvanka Day underscores the significance of Ukraine’s national identity and cultural heritage, while uniting Ukrainians during difficult times.
World Vyshyvanka Day has become a vital element of Ukrainian culture and consciousness, especially in the context of today’s challenges. Observing this holiday not only helps preserve traditions but also serves as a symbol of unity and hope for Ukrainians in times of hardship.
