Heredity and Twins: A Bukovinian Mother's Remarkable Story of Two Sets

Вражаючий досвід буковинської матері, яка виховує дві пари братів-близнюків.

The Unique Experience of Maria Malysh

Maria Malysh from the Putyla district of Bukovina has achieved a rare feat, becoming one of only two women in nearly four decades to give birth to two sets of twins at the Chernivtsi Perinatal Center. Her first children were girls, and eight years later, she welcomed boys. Both pregnancies were free of complications, with each baby weighing nearly three kilograms and delivered via cesarean section. This remarkable occurrence highlights a hereditary predisposition for twin births within her family. Such cases are of particular interest in reproductive medicine, where natural multiple births are less common than those resulting from assisted reproductive technologies.

Emotions and Challenges

Recalling her pregnancies, Maria noted that her first ultrasound came as a profound shock.

"By the second ultrasound, they said it would be twins. That was a real shock. I immediately thought the doctor was joking,"
she said. The arrival of her daughters, named Nika and Viktoria, brought immense joy to the family. 'We were both surprised and happy. I was delighted, but my husband immediately said: I don't know how this is all supposed to work. It's two children at once. It's difficult,' Maria added.

Maria's husband, Oleksandr, joined the Defense Forces at the start of the full-scale invasion and served for over a year in the Luhansk region. After the birth of their daughters, the family eagerly awaited their sons, who arrived eight years later. Viktoria, one of the daughters, recalls: 'I don't remember Nika and I ever going to school in different clothes—like me in a cardigan and her in a bomber jacket. We were so happy that there would be four of us—twin sisters and twin brothers.'

Daughters Nika and Viktoria have been studying vocals at the local Center for Culture and Leisure for over five years. They recently won the Grand Prix at the 'Dzherela Morshyna' festival with their song 'Tears of Victory.'

"Vika and Nika look very harmonious on stage. The jury at every festival always notes that they are twin girls and both sing. They have identical talent, and though they are still young, they are very persistent and hardworking,"
remarked their teacher, Svitlana Shynkariuk.

Statistically, about one in over 40 pregnancies is a multiple birth, though twin births are often associated with the use of reproductive technologies. 'Primarily, it's a genetic factor. If twins were born in previous generations of either the father or mother, then the probability of their birth increases in this family,' commented Dr. Vasyl Rynzhuk on the situation.

The event in Maria Malysh's family illustrates how heredity can influence the occurrence of multiple births. It also underscores the importance of genetic factors in family planning and fertility, especially in the context of modern medical technologies. This family's experience can serve as an example for others facing similar situations and highlights the value of family bonds during challenging times.

Maria's incredible journey of motherhood is not an isolated case in Ukraine.
