Ukraine Implements Basic General Military Training
Ukraine has formally replaced conscript service with a new mandatory program called Basic General Military Training (BGPT). This training is required for all individuals registered for military service. Under the new regulations, those under 25 who complete the BGPT program are no longer subject to a compulsory draft. Instead, they can only be called up for active military service if they provide their personal consent.
Polina Dudchak clarified: 'Such individuals can only be called up for military service with their consent.'
This policy shift is part of a broader military reform effort in Ukraine, aiming to modernize its armed forces while addressing manpower needs. Upon finishing BGPT, individuals under 25 may be placed in the operational reserve, which grants the state the authority to mobilize them without requiring voluntary consent. It is crucial to note that after a citizen turns 25, their registration status automatically changes from 'conscript' to 'person liable for military service.' The procedure for updating this status after age 25 was simplified starting July 31, 2025. Territorial recruitment and social support centers (TRSSCs) are now obligated to change the status within 30 days of the individual's birthday.
Furthermore, military commissariats do not have the right to demand a personal appearance solely for the purpose of changing this status. These innovations are designed to streamline the military registration process and ensure a more efficient mobilization of resources when necessary.
