Carbon monoxide in homes: how a family of 8 managed to avoid tragedy in Transcarpathia

Безпека в домі: як родина з восьми осіб уникнула небезпеки від чадного газу на Закарпатті

Incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning

In the village of Oleshnyk in Transcarpathia, a family of eight avoided carbon monoxide poisoning thanks to the prompt actions of the father. The incident occurred around four in the morning when the entire family, consisting of two adults and six children aged 11 to 24, experienced dangerous symptoms. All family members were urgently taken to the hospital, which undoubtedly helped avoid tragic consequences.

Unfortunately, cases of carbon monoxide poisoning are not isolated. In the Nadvirna district of Ivano-Frankivsk region, three children were poisoned by gas due to violations of generator usage rules. There was also another tragic incident in the Bucha district, where three family members were killed, including a couple and their 11-year-old child. The four-year-old son of this family was hospitalized in serious condition. The preliminary cause of death in the Bucha district was carbon monoxide poisoning due to a malfunctioning gas boiler.

Safety rules for using generators

These incidents highlight the importance of following safety rules when using generators. Generators should only be used outdoors and no closer than 6 meters from buildings. It is strictly forbidden to:

  • install generators in living spaces, garages, basements, or on balconies;
  • not place equipment near windows, doors, and ventilation openings;
  • ensure that exhaust gases do not enter indoor spaces;
  • refuel the generator only after it has completely cooled down.

Implementing these measures can prevent similar tragic cases in the future.

Taking into account the growing number of cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, it is important for the public to be aware of safety rules when using gas appliances and generators. Relevant authorities should conduct information campaigns to raise awareness about potential dangers and ways to avoid them. This can significantly reduce risks and prevent tragedies in the future.
