Joint Development by Vigor Precision and Celanese

Reducing joint weight is a key design challenge as humanoid robots move toward broader commercial use. On August 19 at 1:01 PM, U.S.-based Celanese and China's Vigor Precision revealed a joint project to create polymer-based joint parts for humanoid robots. The companies expect these parts to be more than 30 percent lighter than their metal counterparts, potentially improving energy efficiency, movement, and response time.

Striking the Right Material Balance

Celanese and Vigor Precision plan to replace some metal elements in robot joints with high-performance engineering plastics built for fast motion, high loads, and repeated cycles. The key properties include strength, rigidity, thermal resistance, dimensional stability, and the ability to function without extra lubrication.

  • high strength
  • rigidity
  • high-temperature resistance
  • dimensional accuracy
  • lubrication-free operation

Because these materials are self-lubricating, they may reduce friction and wear in moving parts, which could mean less frequent robot maintenance.

Celanese will handle lifecycle material validation and scale-up for mass production, while Vigor Precision brings expertise in precision plastic molding, gear development, and component manufacturing. Heat resistance is particularly crucial for gears and other precision components, since robot drives and nearby parts heat up during long operating hours and the material must keep its shape and mechanical strength at elevated temperatures.

This undertaking could be a major step for humanoid robotics, as cutting joint mass affects overall machine performance. Improved energy efficiency and faster reaction times could make robots more appealing across manufacturing, healthcare, and home assistance. As the field continues to advance, such innovations may support wider production and everyday adoption of robots.

As the advancements in humanoid robotics continue, it's essential to consider the broader landscape of automation. While innovative designs aim to enhance the efficiency of humanoid robots, industrial robots still outperform their humanoid counterparts in factory settings. Understanding the strengths and limitations of each type of robot can provide valuable insights into their future applications and development.
