Remembering Viktor Yarmolenko
On May 10, 2022, multiple-time Kyiv champion in Kyokushin karate Viktor Yarmolenko was killed in the Luhansk region. His death represented a profound loss for both the sports community and his family.
Born on January 2, 1976, in Kyiv, Yarmolenko was a celebrated athlete representing the Dojo sports club and earned numerous Kyiv championship titles in Kyokushin karate. Beyond his athletic career, he demonstrated courage on the front lines by joining the volunteer battalion "Svoboda." During his military service, he trained as a grenade launcher operator and gunner.
Military Service and Death
Yarmolenko took part in the liberation of Bucha and Irpin during active combat. After the Kyiv region was freed, he deployed east toward the town of Lyman in Luhansk Oblast. On May 10, 2022, near the city of Rubizhne at 9:45 AM, during shelling from a Grad multiple rocket launcher and an NSV-12 Utes heavy machine gun, Senior Soldier Yarmolenko moved forward, displaying battlefield bravery. He eliminated five enemy fighters, but during a subsequent barrage, he sustained fatal shrapnel wounds.
Following his death, Viktor Yarmolenko was buried on May 19, 2022, at Lisove Cemetery in Kyiv. For his courage and valor, he was posthumously awarded the Order For Courage, Third Class. He is survived by his wife and two children, who will forever remember his sacrifice.
