Endre Stromsheim Left Out of Norway's Squad
The exclusion of world champion Endre Stromsheim from Norway's national team for the 2026/27 season has sparked a major uproar in sports circles. The decision was attributed to the athlete's poor competitive performance. Last season, Stromsheim finished 84th in the sprint event in Nove Mesto, a result that cost him a spot at the Olympic Games. Consequently, he ended his season early.
Comments from Sports Leadership
New sports director Lars Meland stated that
“the athlete’s numbers were not high enough based on both the past year and the combined results of the last two seasons.”These selection criteria were made public and remained unchanged since November 2025—a point Stromsheim claims was violated. He has accused the leadership of incompetence and of breaching the selection principles.
Endre Stromsheim, who owns two gold medals from the 2025 World Championships and holds a direct quota for the 2027 World Championships in Otepää, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from management. Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen, also left out of the elite team, noted that
“the leadership made no effort to assess the athletes' actual condition and acted without any dialogue.”
The team has undergone changes, with Patrick Oberegger taking over as head coach and former manager Per-Arne Botnan no longer in his role. It remains unclear how these shifts will affect the team's future development and its members.
The Stromsheim situation underscores the critical need for stability and communication within a sports team, especially under intense competition. A lack of clear selection criteria and opacity in decision-making can harm athletes' morale and the team's overall success. While the coaching shake-up may mark a new chapter for the Norwegian squad, its effectiveness will hinge on whether the new leadership can address these challenges and rebuild trust among the athletes.
