The Death of Dmytro Yuriev
Dmytro Yuriev, a Ukrainian border guard and a celebrated athlete who was a national and world champion in Muay Thai, was killed on March 11, 2022, while defending the city of Mariupol. He had joined the maritime guard in 2018, serving on a ship and aspiring to become a diver. The defense of Mariupol was one of the most intense and prolonged battles in the early stages of the full-scale invasion.
During a combat engagement with invading forces, Yuriev sustained fatal wounds. He is survived by his wife and two sons. The memory of this hero, who gave his life for Ukraine, will be preserved in the hearts of many.
