Host Nations for the 2030 and 2031 Basketball World Championships Announced
FIBA has officially selected the host countries for the 2030 and 2031 Basketball World Championships. Japan will welcome the Women's World Championship in 2030, while France will host the Men's World Championship in 2031. This decision was made on April 22, 2026, during a meeting of the FIBA Central Board held in Berlin.
Women's and Men's World Championships
The 2030 Women's World Championship is scheduled to take place in Tokyo from November 26 to December 8. This marks Japan's first time organizing the women's event, although the country previously hosted the men's World Championship in 2006 and part of the group stage of the 2023 men's tournament in Okinawa. Notably, the Japanese women's team earned a silver medal at the 2020 Olympics, highlighting the nation's strong basketball development. The tournament in Japan also coincides with the centennial anniversary of the Japan Basketball Association.
The 2031 Men's World Championship will run from August 29 to September 14. Matches will be held in Lille, Lyon, and Paris, with the final phase taking place in the French capital. This will be France's first time hosting a men's World Championship, though the country previously organized EuroBasket 2015 and Olympic qualifying tournaments. Additionally, France successfully hosted the 2024 Olympic Games, underscoring its capability to manage major sporting events.
Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General, stated: 'Both selected nations are countries that truly love basketball.'
The upcoming Women's World Championship will be held in Germany in September 2026, while the next men's tournament will take place in Qatar in 2027. These events continue the tradition of international basketball competitions, fueling global interest in the sport.
The selection of Japan and France as hosts highlights the growing popularity of basketball in both countries. Japan, with its prior experience in hosting international tournaments, will have the opportunity to showcase its organizational skills for the women's event, while France, following its successful Olympic Games, will further demonstrate its capacity on the international sports stage. These championships will serve as key milestones in the development of basketball and help promote the sport on a global scale.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming World Championships, fans of basketball can also look forward to the thrilling conclusion of the Ukrainian Women's Basketball Championship, where the champion will be determined in a highly anticipated Final Four showdown. This event highlights the growing competitiveness of women's basketball on a global scale, further enriching the sport's landscape.
