In Cherkasy, a decision was made that allows the city to significantly renew its trolleybus fleet with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The city council deputies approved participation in a large infrastructure project that involves attracting an EBRD loan and grant funds. This is reported by the Cherkasy City Council writes.
Cherkasy to purchase new trolleybuses
According to the director of the infrastructure department, Serhiy Otrishko, there are currently about 50 trolleybuses in the city that are over 30 years old. Due to the wear and tear of the equipment, it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide stable transportation. The city budget alone cannot renew the rolling stock, as one trolleybus costs between 300-400 thousand euros.
Within the EBRD program, Cherkasy will be able to purchase approximately 44 new machines, of which over 30 will have an autonomous range of up to 20 km. This will allow:
-
to operate even during power outages;
-
to access neighborhoods without a contact network;
-
to expand public transport coverage.
The agreement with the EBRD is planned to be signed next Tuesday. The transport is expected to arrive within the next year.
Trolleybuses for Cherkasy: how transport will change
The city receives favorable financial conditions: a loan of 16 million euros, 4 million euros in grant support, and the first three years will only require interest payments. This will allow for a gradual acquisition of new transport and its commissioning.
At the same time, the new route network is being coordinated: plans are to eliminate duplication in the center, optimize travel intervals, and include penalties for schedule violations in contracts with carriers. Similar programs have already updated transport in Ternopil, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Kremenchuk.
