Historic Penalty Shootout Victory Sends Chernihiv to Ukrainian Cup Semifinals

Чудова перемога у серії післяматчевих пенальті відкриває чернігівцям шлях до півфіналу Кубка України.

Chernihiv Football Club's Historic Achievement

In a dramatic quarterfinal, FC Chernihiv has secured a historic place in the Ukrainian Cup semifinals for the first time in the club's history. The team defeated FC Feniks-Mariupol 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a goalless 0-0 draw in regulation time. Founded in 2003, this marks the deepest run Chernihiv has ever made in the national cup competition. The Ukrainian Cup is the country's premier knockout tournament, offering clubs a prestigious path to European competition.

The match, which had been postponed from the previous day due to a series of air raid alerts, saw the visiting Feniks-Mariupol create several dangerous chances in the first half:

  • Orikhovsky fired a shot wide of the goal;
  • Chernihiv's goalkeeper Tatarenko managed to save a strike from Synytsia.

In the second half, the visitors again failed to capitalize on their opportunities: Synytsia was unable to get a clean shot away, and Bohdanov missed the target from distance.

During the initial round of five penalties, each team missed one attempt: Chernihiv's Novikov shot straight at the keeper, while Feniks's Sydorenko failed to beat the goalkeeper. In the sudden-death phase, Feniks defender Horin missed his spot-kick, allowing Chernihiv's Shumylo to score the decisive penalty and send his team into the semifinals.

Club Progress and the Wider Cup Landscape

Chernihiv transitioned to the professional level only in the 2020/21 season. In other quarterfinal action, Cherkasy's LNZ was eliminated from the Cup, falling to Bukovyna Chernivtsi on penalties. Meanwhile, Dynamo Kyiv became the first confirmed semifinalist by defeating Petrovo's Inhulets, with goals from Guerrero and Pikhalyonok securing their victory.

Chernihiv's remarkable semifinal berth is a significant milestone that underscores the club's steady growth and its emerging ability to compete at a high level. This success also highlights the increasing competitiveness within Ukrainian football, as matches continue under challenging circumstances. The results of the quarterfinals promise compelling semifinal matchups, where Chernihiv and Dynamo Kyiv will each pursue their ambitions to lift the Ukrainian Cup.

As Chernihiv celebrates its historic advancement in the Ukrainian Cup, it's worth noting that other teams have also faced similar challenges in their quest for glory. For instance, Bukovyna's dramatic victory over LNZ in a penalty shootout showcases the intense competition and unpredictability of this prestigious tournament, further emphasizing the significance of Chernihiv's achievement.
