Majority Backs Czech-Led Ammunition Plan for Ukraine

A January survey by Kantar CZ reveals that 62% of Czech citizens support continuing their country's initiative to procure artillery shells for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In contrast, 36% of respondents were firmly opposed to the supplies, while 3% remained undecided on the issue. This initiative is a key part of international efforts to help Ukraine defend itself against the ongoing Russian invasion.

Launched in 2024, the Czech program has already delivered approximately 1.8 million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine in 2025 alone. For 2026, international partners have already guaranteed funding for the purchase of a minimum of 760,000 more shells. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has stated that the Czech Republic will maintain its role as the project coordinator, provided that foreign donors like Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands continue to fund it, avoiding any additional financial burden on Czech taxpayers.

Voter Sentiment Across the Political Spectrum

Support for the ammunition initiative varies significantly among voters of different political parties:

  • Voters for opposition parties overwhelmingly support the initiative.
  • Supporters of the 'Motorists' party back it by a two-thirds majority.
  • Voters for Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's ANO party are evenly split on the issue.
  • Only one in five (20%) voters for the SPD party supports continuing the ammunition supplies to Ukraine.

The poll results indicate substantial public backing in the Czech Republic for aiding Ukraine, which could influence future political decisions in Prague. The continued willingness of partners like Germany and Denmark to fund the project underscores the international solidarity behind Ukraine's defense. The analysis of voter support also highlights the domestic political dynamics and societal divisions regarding the Czech Republic's foreign policy direction.
