Price of Fresh Peas in Kyiv Drops Threefold in Just One Week

Ціни на свіжий горошок у Києві знизились у три рази всього за тиждень.

Sharp Price Drop for Fresh Green Peas in Kyiv

In Kyiv, the cost of fresh green peas in pods has plummeted from 600 UAH per kilogram to just 195 UAH per kilogram over the course of a week. This dramatic decline is driven by the replacement of expensive imported produce with locally grown crops. As sellers explain, 'the costly imports have been replaced by harvests from Ukrainian fields.'

Current State of the Pea Market

With the arrival of summer, Kyiv's markets have seen a significant price reduction for one of the most anticipated seasonal vegetables: fresh green peas in pods. According to vendors, prices have nearly tripled down in just the last seven days. A week ago, young peas were a rare find on the capital's shelves, with prices that were hard to swallow—reaching 600 UAH per kilogram. Sellers often avoided displaying price tags to not shock customers with the exorbitant cost, only revealing the amount upon request.

The situation has now completely flipped: supply has surged, price tags have finally appeared, and costs are falling. Today, a kilogram of crisp peas can be bought for 195 UAH. With greater availability and more reasonable prices, buyer activity has also picked up. Previously, city residents would buy peas only for a 'taste test,' but now most are purchasing larger portions, typically a kilogram at a time.

However, Ukrainian consumers should not expect traditionally low prices for vegetables and fruits this summer. Although markets and supermarkets are entering a seasonal increase in supply, the overall price level for the entire vegetable range will remain high compared to previous years. Experts point to two main triggers for this situation:

  • a severe economic crisis in the agricultural sector;
  • a reduction in acreage for basic food crops.

Additionally, despite the unpredictable spring weather, the Ukrainian cherry market will be reliably supplied with domestically grown produce this summer. During the peak harvest season, prices for this beloved summer fruit are expected to stabilize and remain within the range of 100–150 UAH per kilogram.

The drop in fresh green pea prices highlights the positive impact of Ukrainian harvests on the market, potentially improving access to this product for consumers. Yet, despite this encouraging trend, the broader vegetable market remains challenging due to economic hurdles that could affect prices for other food categories. Shoppers should stay cautious and monitor market changes, especially amid ongoing instability in the agricultural sector.

The recent fluctuations in the prices of fresh produce are not isolated incidents. As highlighted in a related report, Ukraine's overall harvest has decreased significantly, leading to new pricing trends for fruits and vegetables. This broader context sheds light on the current situation in Kyiv's markets and suggests that while some prices may be dropping, the overall market dynamics remain complex and challenging for consumers.
