Fruit Prices in Kyiv
By late May, the first watermelons and melons of the new season had appeared at street stalls and grocery stands across Kyiv. Imported watermelons from Azerbaijan are selling for 140 UAH per kilogram, while melons start at 200 UAH per kilogram. For consumers, this means a small five-kilogram watermelon will cost at least 700 UAH.
Melon prices this season far exceed those from last year. In July 2022, during the peak season, melon prices ranged between 50 and 70 UAH per kilogram. For example, a Cantaloupe melon at the Novus chain cost 149.00 UAH per kilogram, while Uzbek and Amal melons at Ekomarket and Silpo were priced at 109.90 UAH and 109.0 UAH per kilogram, respectively.
Strawberries and the Drivers of Price Hikes
In addition to watermelons and melons, early May saw the first strawberries from Transcarpathia hit the market in Kyiv, priced at 250 UAH per kilogram. As a result, shoppers are witnessing a sharp rise in fruit prices compared to last year, driven by various market factors.
The surge in prices for fruits like watermelons, melons, and strawberries can be attributed to several causes, including higher transportation costs, shifts in growing conditions, and the overall state of the economy. Consumers accustomed to lower prices in previous years may struggle to adjust to these new market realities. This could impact sales volumes and shopping habits in the months ahead.
As fruit prices continue to climb, shoppers are also noticing fluctuations in other produce costs, such as onions, which have seen a significant increase for the first time in three months. This trend highlights broader economic challenges affecting the agricultural sector.
