The Outlook for Attracting Foreign Capital to Ukraine
In a discussion with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko, IT entrepreneur Serhiy Bondarenko explored the prospects for drawing foreign investment into Ukraine after the war. He identified two primary factors that could attract international capital and urged Ukrainian businesses to prepare for potential partnerships with foreign firms. The reconstruction of Ukraine's economy is expected to be one of the largest post-conflict rebuilding efforts in modern European history.
The interview, published on YouTube under the title 'The Glass Ceiling of Ukrainian Business: Why Companies Die with Their Owner. S. Bondarenko', featured Bondarenko expressing confidence that foreign corporations, including giants like BlackRock, are prepared to invest. He stated,
“Well, I am absolutely certain that companies will enter here. BlackRock and its statements, that they want to rebuild Ukraine, make me a bit uneasy, perhaps.”Bondarenko also voiced a concern that Ukraine could fall under the excessive influence of a single corporation, a situation that would depend on the Ukrainian government's policies for attracting investors.
Primary Motivations for Investor Interest
Bondarenko highlighted the following key reasons for investor interest:
- The social responsibility initiatives of large companies seeking to support Ukraine's reconstruction;
- The opportunity to achieve a high ROI (return on investment).
He explained:
“The first reason could be social responsibility for large companies, something like: 'Look, we are helping Ukraine rebuild,' and they will use this for publicity.”Bondarenko cited the low current cost of assets in Ukraine as a second crucial factor, offering the potential for significant profit: “Let's put it this way: in the developed world, there is essentially no other place where you can get an ROI in 'X's,' meaning earn multiples on your investment.”
Furthermore, Serhiy Bondarenko called on representatives of Ukrainian business to ready themselves for collaboration with international investors. He stressed the importance of formalizing business structures and preparing documentation: “Therefore, to everyone who has a business and knows how to do something, prepare your businesses so they look like businesses, not just like your personal craft.” Bondarenko emphasized that potential investors typically request documentation for the three previous years, so Ukrainian entrepreneurs should prepare for this requirement.
Attracting foreign capital is critically important for reviving the Ukrainian economy post-war. The prospect of high returns on investment (ROI) and the social responsibility angle for major corporations could be pivotal factors motivating foreign investors to commit funds to Ukraine. If Ukrainian entrepreneurs can adapt to new conditions and meet the standards of international investors, it could lead to substantial growth for individual businesses and the country's economy as a whole.
