One Dangerous Symptom, Four Possible Causes

June 26, 4:30 AM — Washing machines have become an essential appliance in modern homes. Yet using them can sometimes lead to hazardous situations, including electric shocks. Understanding why a washing machine may deliver a shock is critical for household safety.

The first rule to remember: before inspecting any appliance that gives shocks, always disconnect it from the power supply completely. There are basically four reasons for this malfunction, each with a very different origin — from a simple building wiring issue to a worn-out component inside the machine itself.

Main Causes of Electric Shock

  • The most common cause is improper or missing grounding in the electrical system. Without correct grounding, electrical devices can become dangerous.
  • Plugging several high-power appliances — like a washer, dryer, or dishwasher — into one extension cord or multi-socket adapter. This can overload the circuit and lead to electric shock.
  • Damaged insulation on the heating element, meaning electrical current leaks through a faulty heating coil or thermostat.
  • A defective drain pump that causes current leakage, since water is a conductor of electricity.

In machines from brands like Ariston, Samsung, and Indesit, the heating element is located at the rear of the unit, while in Bosch, Siemens, Neff, or AEG models, it is positioned at the front. To test the heating element, use a multimeter set to megohm mode, and always perform the test with the appliance completely unplugged.

An electric shock is not something to live with or put off fixing. It's essential to address these symptoms promptly and take the necessary safety measures.

Prioritizing safety when using household appliances is a key responsibility for every household. Wearing protective gloves while working on the machine can be an extra precaution to avoid dangerous situations.

The importance of following safety rules when operating household appliances cannot be overstated. Recognizing the causes of potential electric shocks can help prevent serious injuries and property damage. Regularly checking both the electrical system and the condition of the appliance itself can ensure the safe use of washing machines and other electrical devices in the home.
