Drone Attack Risks Looming Over Europe
The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has alerted Spain, France, and Italy to the possibility of drone assaults launched from maritime platforms, based on intelligence indicating Kremlin plans to escalate tensions. This alert followed a meeting in Moscow on August 25, where CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged in discussions addressing European security challenges.
France has already increased its defensive posture against potential drone and cyberattacks targeting its critical infrastructure. Experts suggest Russia might deploy the 'Gerber' drone in strikes against these nations. Measuring approximately 2 meters in length with a wingspan of 2.5 meters and weighing up to 18 kilograms, the Gerber drone can reach speeds of around 160 km/h and reportedly has a range of up to 600 km. Several of these drones can be transported aboard commercial vessels and launched via catapult systems.

On September 17, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced Russian plans for hybrid drone and missile attacks against countries backing Ukraine, specifically mentioning Poland. French President Emmanuel Macron corroborated these claims on September 18, affirming that Tusk’s statements are well-founded and documented.
Further concerns were voiced on September 21 by heads of intelligence agencies from the Czech Republic, Latvia, and Sweden, who warned of a potential intensification of Russia’s sabotage activities in Europe in the coming months. Michal Koudelka, chief of the Czech Security and Information Service (BIS), indicated a possibility of limited incursions or provocations by Moscow within this timeframe.
Following Ratcliffe’s Moscow visit, The Wall Street Journal reported that he cautioned Russia against any attacks on NATO. Meanwhile, Russian forces have already deployed nearly 150 drones to probe vulnerabilities within NATO’s air defense systems. A source close to Lithuania’s Ministry of Defense noted:
"They will employ sea-launched drones concealed within containers on ships."
