Mediterranean Sea Faces Near-Certain Risk of Over 1-Meter Tsunami Within Three Decades

Threat of Tsunamis in the Mediterranean Basin

Experts warn that the Mediterranean Sea is highly likely to experience a tsunami wave exceeding one meter in height within the next 30 years. UNESCO estimates the probability of such an event at nearly 100% across the Mediterranean basin. The most vulnerable zones lie along active fault lines in the Ligurian Sea and near North Africa. On France’s French Riviera, tsunami waves could reach the coastline in fewer than 10 minutes after an earthquake.

Historical records in France show that earthquakes have previously triggered tsunamis. On February 23, 1887, a magnitude 6.5 to 6.8 earthquake in the Ligurian Sea caused a tsunami that drew the sea back by one meter and produced waves about two meters high in Antibes and Cannes. Another tragic event occurred on October 16, 1979, when a landslide near Nice, caused by a construction site collapse at a new port, generated a tsunami that claimed eight lives. In this incident, water levels rose up to 3.5 meters and surged 150 meters inland affecting Nice, Antibes, and Cannes.

The Tsunami Ready Initiative

Since 2012, France’s National Tsunami Warning Center (Cenalt) has been issuing alerts through the FR-Alert system. Waves originating from North Africa could reach the French Riviera in under 90 minutes, while tsunamis from the Ligurian Sea may arrive in less than 10 minutes. The center aims to deliver initial warnings to authorities within 15 minutes following a potentially dangerous earthquake.

Evacuation strategies have been developed for Nice and surrounding areas, taking into account the local terrain, obstacles, human mobility, and possible congestion. Nearly 100 shelter points are incorporated into these plans. The designated evacuation zones along the French coast include areas up to 5 meters above sea level and extend 200 meters inland from the shoreline, with river mouths having zones that may reach 500 meters.

In June 2026, the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolitan area earned UNESCO’s Tsunami Ready certification. This program requires fulfillment of 12 criteria, including:

  • Comprehensive risk assessments;
  • Clear evacuation maps;
  • Community preparedness initiatives;
  • Effective response plans;
  • 24/7 channels for receiving and disseminating official warnings.

Public education under this program involves signage, training sessions, evacuation drills, and collaboration with local schools. Importantly, residents are advised not to return to coastal areas immediately after the first tsunami wave, as hazardous currents can persist for several hours.

These findings highlight the critical need for tsunami preparedness in Mediterranean coastal regions near tectonic fault lines. The Tsunami Ready program implemented by the Nice Côte d’Azur area represents a vital advancement in protecting communities through evacuation planning and public awareness. Given the almost certain risk, it is essential that residents remain informed and ready to respond to potential emergencies.
