Yastremska became the second Ukrainian representative to participate in the US Open. Earlier, Yulia Starodubtseva was eliminated from the tournament after losing to Russian Anna Blinkova.
Yastremska's first-round opponent was Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
The start of the match was difficult for Yastremska – Pavlyuchenkova took the lead with a score of 3:1. However, the Ukrainian managed to equalize and take the set to a tiebreak, where she won with a score of 7:6.
In the second set, the competition was again intense: the players exchanged won games and reached another tiebreak. This time, Pavlyuchenkova proved to be stronger and equalized the sets.
