Defense Partnership Expands Beyond Traditional Boundaries
Denmark and Ukraine are broadening their defense collaboration, with talks now covering financial backing for Ukrainian weapons production, the development of anti-ballistic missile systems, military training, and the mobilization of additional resources for Ukraine’s armed forces. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov expressed gratitude for Denmark’s consistent support, highlighting its contributions to key defense priorities such as the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), the Czech initiative, and the effective Danish funding model.
Key Pillars of Cooperation
A major highlight of the partnership is Denmark’s role in transferring F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, a significant boost to the country’s air combat capabilities. Denmark is also continuing its work on modernizing a training center to enhance military readiness. In Kyiv, Fedorov met with Danish Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus to discuss the implementation of the bilateral Drone Deal and the potential launch of joint innovation programs aimed at supporting startups focused on security solutions.
The meeting also addressed a joint anti-ballistic missile project, underscoring the importance of sharing battlefield-tested expertise and technology. According to Fedorov,
“Ukraine is ready to share with partners the experience and innovations that prove effective on the battlefield. This is the foundation of a win-win cooperation: Ukraine gains more resources for the front, while Denmark gets access to Ukrainian combat experience, data, and technologies of modern warfare.”
Another topic was unlocking €6 billion in funding from the European Peace Facility (EPF), which could significantly bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Fedorov stressed that the coming months are decisive in Russia’s war against Ukraine, emphasizing the need to strengthen defense ties with Denmark.
This deepening defense partnership marks a critical step in enhancing Ukraine’s military strength amid ongoing Russian aggression. Denmark’s support—through the transfer of advanced military technology like F-16 jets, as well as funding and upgrades to training facilities—reflects a robust security collaboration between the two nations.
