When we celebrate Independence Day of Ukraine

Independence Day of Ukraine is traditionally celebrated every year on August 24. On this day in 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted

'The Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine'
, which became a defining document in the modern history of the state. The holiday was established by the decree of the President of Ukraine in 1992.

History of the holiday

The history of the struggle of Ukrainians for statehood spans centuries. It has been filled with uprisings, liberation movements, and political aspirations.

1918: The Ukrainian People's Republic proclaimed its independence, but maintaining statehood turned out to be impossible due to external aggression and internal contradictions.

1991: After decades of totalitarian regime, the Ukrainian people got a chance to restore statehood. On August 24, the Verkhovna Rada voted for the historic Act, which became the final point in the collapse of the Soviet Union and a symbol of Ukraine's revival.

Meaning of symbols

Although Independence Day is associated with the blue-yellow flag and the Trident, its main symbols are the Act of Proclamation of Independence and the Declaration of State Sovereignty. These documents are the foundation of modern Ukraine.

The Act of Proclamation of Independence is the legal foundation of our state, confirming its right to self-determination.

The Declaration of State Sovereignty is a document that laid the groundwork for building Ukraine as a democratic, legal state with its own armed forces, economic system, and foreign policy.
