Crimean Resistance Day: The Pivotal Events of February 26, 2014

February 26, 2014, marked a critical turning point in Crimea's history, as large-scale clashes erupted in Simferopol between pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian activists. This day is remembered for a major rally of Crimean Tatars who gathered to support Ukraine's territorial integrity. Two opposing demonstrations took place outside the building of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea:

  • A pro-Ukrainian rally, which drew a crowd of up to 10,000 people;
  • A pro-Russian gathering, which attracted approximately 700 participants.

Tragically, two people lost their lives during the violent confrontations between the opposing groups.

These events initiated a new and dangerous phase for Crimea, culminating in armed aggression from Russia. On February 27, 2014, armed Russian special forces seized the Supreme Council building, a decisive step in the peninsula's occupation. In response to these events, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on February 26, 2020, establishing February 26 as the Day of Resistance to the Occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol. This day symbolizes the memory of the struggle for Ukraine's freedom and territorial integrity. The international community widely condemned Russia's subsequent annexation of Crimea as a violation of international law.

The Significance of the Day of Resistance

This day serves not only as a remembrance of the tragic events of 2014 but also highlights the importance of supporting the rights of the Crimean Tatar people and all Ukrainians in their struggle for justice. February 26 has become a symbol of unbreakable resolve in the face of occupation and honors the memory of those who died for their country.

Commemorating the Day of Resistance to the Occupation of Crimea holds profound importance for Ukraine, as it underscores the state's unwavering position on preserving its territorial integrity and upholding human rights. This day serves as a reminder of the historical events that shaped the subsequent situation in the region and calls on the international community to take active steps in supporting Ukraine against aggression. The memory of February 26, 2014, continues to inspire Ukrainians in their defense of rights and freedom.
