Defender's Day of Ukraine
On October 1, Ukrainians celebrate Defender's Day for the second year in a row. This holiday allows us to honor the warriors who defend the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine. On this day, we remember the heroes of today and the domestic defenders of the past who fought for our freedom and independence.
Also on October 1, the Feast of the Protection of the Holy Virgin and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks are celebrated. These holidays protect our state and its defenders. Today, all defenders pray to the Holy Virgin for peace in Ukraine and protection from enemies.
Changes in the celebration of holidays by the Ukrainian church
In 2023, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church of Ukraine) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church switched to the New Julian church calendar. Therefore, holidays with a fixed date are now celebrated 13 days earlier. As a result, Defender's Day and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks are now celebrated earlier.
