Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service Day: History and Observance on January 24

День розвідки України: святкуємо історію та традиції 24 січня.

Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service Day

Ukraine marks its Foreign Intelligence Service Day annually on January 24. This professional holiday was established in 2018 by a decree from President Petro Poroshenko. The date was chosen deliberately, as it commemorates the creation of the first nationwide foreign intelligence unit on January 24, 1919, during the era of the Directorate of the Ukrainian People's Republic. This means Ukraine's foreign intelligence history spans over a century. The establishment of this day highlights the critical, often unseen, role intelligence plays in modern statecraft.

The presidential decree cited the significant contributions of intelligence personnel in safeguarding Ukraine's national interests and protecting the lives and health of its citizens abroad. President Poroshenko stated:

“Taking into account the significant contribution of the employees of the intelligence agencies of Ukraine to ensuring the protection of Ukraine's national interests from external threats, as well as the life and health of its citizens and objects of state property outside Ukraine, strengthening the state's defense capability, with the aim of reviving national intelligence identity and initiating modern traditions of honoring the exploits of Ukraine's foreign intelligence, I hereby decree: to establish in Ukraine the Day of Foreign Intelligence of Ukraine, which shall be celebrated annually on January 24.”

Observance Traditions

Traditions for observing Foreign Intelligence Service Day include offering congratulations in prose and verse to honor professionals in this vital field. It is customary to express gratitude and respect for those who ensure the country's security while operating under conditions of risk and uncertainty. Themed greeting cards have also become an integral part of the holiday's observance, underscoring the importance of foreign intelligence to Ukraine's national security.

Celebrating this day emphasizes the crucial work of intelligence agencies amid the contemporary challenges facing the nation. In an era of global threats and conflict, the role of foreign intelligence has become increasingly relevant, as it provides the informational support needed for strategic decision-making. The observance helps raise public awareness about the intelligence service's activities and its contribution to defending Ukraine's national interests, fostering a deeper understanding of its silent guardians.
