Kyiv Council Deputy Injured in Winter Hazard
Yevhen Kuzmenko, a deputy of the Kyiv City Council, sustained a spinal fracture after slipping on ice in the capital. He publicly disclosed the injury on January 19. Kuzmenko has served on the council since 2020 and holds the position of deputy head of the commission on architecture, urban planning, and land relations. This incident highlights the dangers posed by inadequate winter maintenance in a major European capital.
A severe ice event has gripped Kyiv, resulting in a high number of injuries. As of January 15, 308 people had sought medical attention, with more than 50 requiring hospitalization. Kuzmenko admitted the injury will sideline him from work for at least four months.
Mixed Message for Municipal Services
In his statement, the deputy offered both thanks and sharp criticism directed at city maintenance crews:
“I sincerely thank the city services and management companies. Winter arrived unexpectedly. I am ashamed of our collective work.”
