Ukraine Spends Record $9.4 Billion on Chinese Drones in a Single Week

Україна інвестує рекордні 9.4 мільярда доларів у безпілотники з Китаю за тиждень.

Drone Procurement and Defense Industry Growth

In a significant surge of military spending, Ukraine's State Defense Procurement Agency signed contracts worth 9.37 billion hryvnias for Chinese-made drones between February 14 and 21. This figure is one and a half times greater than the total value of all contracts signed in December of the previous year. Over the last month, the agency has contracted 11.4 billion hryvnias worth of Chinese UAVs, an amount equal to all similar procurement conducted in the second half of 2025.

This sharp acceleration in drone acquisitions began following a change in leadership at the Ministry of Defense in January 2026. The unit price for a Matrice 4T drone is approximately 188,000 hryvnias, while the Matrice 4E model costs about 141,000 hryvnias. This procurement drive highlights the state's intensified efforts to equip its military units with modern technology, as drones have become a critical asset on the modern battlefield.

New Supply Mechanisms

In a parallel development, Ukraine's Ministry of Defense has officially introduced a new mechanism for supplying fuel and lubricants to its military units. Concurrently, domestic arms manufacturers are now fulfilling over 50% of the Defense Forces' needs for weapons and equipment. The Ukrainian defense-industrial complex continues to expand its production capacity, which has grown from $1 billion in 2022 to $50 billion in 2026.

These developments underscore Ukraine's intensified efforts to bolster its defensive capabilities amid ongoing threats. The increase in drone procurement and the expansion of the domestic defense industry are likely to be crucial factors in enhancing the effectiveness of military operations. In the context of a protracted conflict and the necessity to adapt to new technologies, such steps could significantly impact Ukraine's strategic capabilities in the future.
