Water Level Alert Issued for the Desna River
Authorities have issued a yellow-level danger warning (Level I) as the Desna River continues to rise. According to the Chernihiv Regional Hydrometeorology Center, a gradual flood event will unfold from April 28 to 30 along the Desna downstream of the village of Rozloty. Water levels are increasing by 1–4 cm per day, leading to the flooding of the river's floodplain near the city of Novhorod-Siverskyi. This has already disrupted transportation routes in both Novhorod-Siverskyi and Koriukivka districts.
River Conditions and Weather Outlook
As of 8:00 AM on April 28, the Seim River and the lower Desna River near Rozloty are experiencing slow water level rises of 1–2 cm per day. In contrast, the Snow River is seeing a decline in water levels following the spring flood.
Meanwhile, meteorologists have warned of nighttime frosts across Ukraine from April 28 to 30. An orange-level danger warning (Level II) has been declared for temperatures dropping to 0–3°C. On April 28, the country can expect partly cloudy skies with scattered rain in some areas. Winds will come from the northwest at 7–12 m/s, with gusts potentially reaching 15–20 m/s overnight in eastern and northeastern regions.
“From April 28 to 30, a gradual flood will develop on the Desna River downstream of the village of Rozloty, with daily water level increases of 1–4 cm. This will keep the floodplain near Novhorod-Siverskyi submerged and continue to disrupt transportation in the Novhorod-Siverskyi and Koriukivka districts,” stated the Chernihiv Regional Hydrometeorology Center.
These conditions pose significant risks to local infrastructure and daily life, as the Desna’s floodplain flooding has already cut off key transport links. Additionally, the forecasted frosts could harm crops and vegetation, complicating the situation for farmers. Residents and local authorities are urged to exercise caution and stay updated through official hydrometeorological channels.
