Inquiry Launched into Pochayiv Lavra's Alleged Russian Connections
Ukraine’s State Service for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience (DESS) is set to investigate the Pochayiv Holy Dormition Lavra over potential links to Russia. A research team, established under DESS Order No. H-106/11 dated June 19, 2026, will examine the monastery’s ties with a foreign religious organization currently banned in Ukraine. The inspection is scheduled to begin on June 24, 2026.
This decision aligns with the requirements of Ukraine’s Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations and the procedure for identifying signs of affiliation between religious groups and foreign entities. DESS has emphasized that it
“operates strictly within the framework of current legislation and with respect for religious freedom. At the same time, any indications of foreign influence or subordination related to prohibited structures will be thoroughly examined, and the findings will be presented publicly.”
Earlier, on October 8, 2025, law enforcement conducted searches on the grounds of the Pochayiv Lavra. Police officers, together with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), sought documents confirming the circumstances of the alleged illegal appropriation of a church building belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). The searches took place at the All Saints Church located in the cemetery. Authorities also identified individuals who obstructed the searches.
Growing Scrutiny of Religious Organizations
The investigation into the Pochayiv Lavra reflects heightened attention from Ukrainian authorities toward religious organizations that may maintain ties with foreign entities, particularly Russia. This is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to bolster national security and counter foreign influence in the religious sphere. The outcome of this probe could carry significant implications for the UOC-MP, especially given the prior searches and ongoing legal proceedings concerning its property rights.
