The Role of Visceral Fat and Grip Strength in Predicting Mortality
A recent study has revealed that excess visceral fat around the abdomen combined with low relative grip strength nearly doubles the risk of death. This combined measure provides a more accurate predictor of mortality than the commonly used Body Mass Index (BMI). Researchers analyzed health data from 5,674 American adults over a period of almost seven years. Their findings were published in The Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics.
Main Mortality Risk Factors Identified
Scientists from China pinpointed two critical factors influencing mortality risk:
- Abdominal fat accumulation;
- Reduced relative grip strength.
The study showed that individuals with both high abdominal fat and low grip strength faced a 97% increase in all-cause mortality risk. Additionally, low relative grip strength alone was associated with a roughly 60% higher risk of death. These associations remained consistent regardless of participants’ age, socioeconomic background, lifestyle habits, or existing health conditions.
This condition is known as dynapenic obesity. To assess excess fat, researchers measured abdominal circumference, while relative grip strength was calculated using BMI. Although BMI remains a standard tool for assessing healthy weight, its effectiveness in predicting mortality risks has been questioned. This highlights the importance of incorporating muscle strength relative to body size into health evaluations.

The study emphasizes the need to rethink traditional health assessment methods. With obesity and related diseases rising globally and contributing to increased mortality, adopting these novel indicators could improve population health monitoring and prevention strategies. These findings underscore the limitations of traditional metrics like BMI in evaluating health risks. For instance, recent research has shown that waist circumference serves as a straightforward indicator of obesity that may be overlooked by BMI, further emphasizing the need for more accurate assessment methods in healthcare.
