Retkcliffe’s Strategic Trip to Moscow
At the end of August 2023, CIA Director John Retkcliffe traveled to Moscow to deliver a key message from U.S. intelligence: Russia is losing the war. According to U.S. assessments, the conflict in Ukraine has reached a stalemate, while Russia’s economy is facing severe deterioration. This visit aligns with Washington’s broader policy advocating for negotiations as a pathway to resolving the crisis.
“Engage in negotiations!” is the firm demand coming from the American administration.
Foreign Ministers Meet in New York
In New York, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Wadephul urged Russia to de-escalate tensions and enter meaningful talks, emphasizing the importance of constructive relations. He stated:
“I call on all member states to join us in convincing Russia that the future is shaped at the negotiation table—not on the blood-stained streets of cities and villages.”
Lavrov responded by criticizing Germany, accusing it of militarism and revanchism, and questioned Berlin’s permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Meanwhile, at the UN Security Council, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski commented on the ongoing conflict in Donbas and the economic disparities involved:
- Moscow has attempted to seize Donbas for 12 years, while Kyiv has been defending it for over 4 years.
- Ukraine’s economy is one-tenth the size of Russia’s.
- Europe’s economy is ten times larger than Russia’s.
- NATO’s combined economy is 25 times greater than Russia’s.
Sikorski added:
“Russia has been held back by a heroic Ukraine, whose economy is only a tenth the size of Russia’s.”
Within German diplomatic circles, doubts persist about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the G20 summit scheduled for December 2023 in Miami. The German government has also blamed the Russian military intelligence agency, the GRU, for the recent incident at Leipzig airport. Wrapping up the meeting, Wadephul noted that “there is little genuine willingness to compromise in Moscow, whereas Kyiv has repeatedly expressed readiness for dialogue.”
