The Polish government is preparing changes to the rules for the stay of Ukrainians in the country after the cancellation of the special law. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration explains that this act was adopted as a temporary solution in the conditions of a massive influx of refugees due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, but the situation has now changed and requires new approaches. This is reported by InPoland.

The current amendment to the special law will be in effect until March 4, 2026. After this date, Ukrainian citizens in Poland will have the same stay rules as other foreigners, without additional privileges.

Deadline for applying for PESEL UKR in Poland: new rules

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration reported that Ukrainians will still be able to receive temporary protection, but the procedure will become stricter. The key change is the limitation of the deadline for issuing PESEL UKR. Newly arrived Ukrainian citizens must submit an application within 14 days of entering Poland.

If this deadline is not met, the lack of registration will be considered as an implicit refusal of temporary protection. This may affect the legality of stay and access to social services.

Temporary protection for Ukrainians in Poland after 2026

The Polish government is simultaneously preparing new regulatory solutions that are intended to comprehensively regulate the status of Ukrainians after the expiration of the special law. This includes rules for legal residency, access to the labor market, and other aspects that will be applied under general migration norms.

The agency emphasizes that the transitional period will last until March 2026, allowing Ukrainians time to prepare for changes and timely comply with new registration and documentation requirements in Poland.
