Pidruchnyi and Sanitra Conclude Their Partnership
Dmytro Pidruchnyi, captain of Ukraine's biathlon team, has ended his working relationship with coach Juraj Sanitra following the conclusion of the Olympic cycle. Their collaboration began in 2016 when the Slovak specialist took over as head coach of the Ukrainian men's biathlon team. Over the course of ten years, the duo competed at four Olympic Games and achieved significant success, most notably Pidruchnyi's gold medal at the 2019 World Championships. This split marks the end of one of the most successful partnerships in recent Ukrainian biathlon history.
In his comments, Dmytro Pidruchnyi stated:
“I wouldn't say we decided to split up. We simply had a plan to work together until the end of the Olympic cycle, and this plan was set a long time ago” – Dmytro Pidruchnyi.
He also emphasized that after Sanitra did not remain the team's head coach, they decided to continue working together for the remaining two years of the cycle. The partnership officially concluded after the final World Cup stage of the 2025/26 season in Holmenkollen, which Pidruchnyi missed due to illness.
Dmytro Pidruchnyi's Career Highlights
Pidruchnyi's achievements during this period include:
- 10 flower ceremony finishes;
- three fourth-place finishes at World Cup and World Championship events;
- three appearances in the top 20 of the overall World Cup standings.
Pidruchnyi noted that “all the best results were connected with him – not only mine, but the team's as well.” He also considers Juraj Sanitra one of the best coaches in the history of Ukrainian men's biathlon.
The Ukrainian biathlon team has undergone a coaching staff reshuffle and has now finalized the rosters for its men's and women's teams for the 2026/27 season. Pidruchnyi reflected on the partnership, stating: “Over 10 years, the relationship between a coach and an athlete develops to a point where you experience various results and situations, and all of it needs to be discussed.”
He added that he last spoke with Juraj Sanitra a few days ago and remains in contact with him, discussing his next steps. The end of this long-standing collaboration represents a significant transition for Pidruchnyi and the national team as they adapt to new leadership and strategies for future international competition.
The recent changes in the coaching staff reflect a broader shift within the Ukrainian biathlon teams as they prepare for the upcoming season. With the announcement of the new rosters for both the men's and women's teams for the 2026/27 competitive year, the focus now turns to how these adjustments will impact the athletes' performance on the international stage.
