Discovery of extinct giant tortoise species

Researchers from Yale University have discovered two extinct species of giant tortoises from the Galapagos Islands. This discovery was made possible by analyzing degraded DNA obtained from museum specimens in the form of dry bones. The use of a new computer algorithm allowed for the reconstruction of the evolutionary tree even with less than 1% of the genome preserved.

The obtained data was superimposed on a reference phylogenetic model of modern reptiles, which enabled the identification of unique extinct tortoise lineages from the islands of San Cristobal and Santa Fe. Previously, similar samples could not be used due to high levels of biological contamination.

The main difficulty lay in reconstructing the genetic relationships of the extinct Galapagos tortoises, as the obtained DNA was highly degraded and fragmented.

Additionally, sailors who traveled between the islands transported giant tortoises as live provisions, which led to the mating of tortoises lost by sailors with local species. The genes of the vanished populations identified in this study may still live in modern hybrid tortoises. This discovery may serve as a basis for breeding programs that could revive lost species in future generations.
