A Slow-Burning Threat: How Reservoir Siltation Imperils Drinking Water for Two Billion

Unlike dramatic droughts or floods, the steady accumulation of sediment often goes unnoticed until it is too late. A 2026 global analysis of more than half a million artificial water bodies warns that over half the world’s reservoirs could become non-functional by 2060 as sediment fills them in. Such a loss would threaten water supply for more than 2 billion people and roughly 26% of irrigated farmland. Currently, reservoirs lose an average of 7.3% of their capacity each decade.

Why Siltation Happens and What It Means

The root cause is siltation: soil, sand, and rock are washed into rivers and then get trapped behind dams. Already, one in five artificial reservoirs worldwide is at high risk. Looking ahead to 2060, scientists project that 58.6% of small reservoirs—those covering less than one square kilometer—and 38.1% of large ones will have become non-operational.

The study identifies 16 major hotspots, including western America and the Afro-Eurasian sediment belts. Reservoirs are critical for drinking water, irrigation, hydropower, and flood control, so severe siltation directly endangers the water supply of more than 2 billion people. This makes urgent action all the more necessary.
