K2 Black Panther tanks arrive in Poland
Warsaw has taken delivery of 28 South Korean-made K2 Black Panther main battle tanks. They will reinforce the Polish Army's 16th Mechanized Division, stationed near Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the arrival and noted that the transfer agreement was signed on August 1, 2025.
The shipment is the latest phase of an armor modernization drive that began in summer 2022, when Warsaw and Seoul agreed on a framework deal for 980 K2 tanks. The first contract, signed in August 2022, covered 180 tanks in baseline configuration delivered directly from South Korea. Hyundai Rotem completed that contract by November 2025, delivering all vehicles to Poland.
Future deliveries and Poland's defense posture
Upcoming shipments will feature the K2PL, a localized version that incorporates Polish components. A second agreement, also signed on August 1, 2025, covers the production and delivery of another 180 K2 and K2PL tanks. The new vehicles will replace Soviet-era T-72 and Polish PT-91 Twardy tanks, a substantial number of which were transferred to Ukraine.
“This is an important step that expands the production capacity of our industry and steadily strengthens Poland's security,” said Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The deployment of K2 Black Panther tanks is expected to improve Poland's defense capability, particularly in light of regional geopolitical challenges.
The delivery also highlights deepening defense cooperation between Poland and South Korea, driven by Warsaw's need to modernize its armed forces amid Europe's shifting security landscape. Replacing older Soviet-built armor with modern systems will boost combat readiness and supports Poland's broader push to strengthen its own defense. Localized production of the new tanks could also benefit Poland's defense industry.
