522 Fallen Defenders Returned to Ukraine in Latest Repatriation Effort

Повернення героїв: 522 захисників, які загинули, тепер вдома в Україні.

Repatriation of Deceased Ukrainian Service Members

A total of 522 bodies, identified by Russian authorities as Ukrainian military personnel, have been returned to Ukraine. This repatriation was made possible through coordinated efforts by Ukrainian agencies and international mediators. The remains were transported by members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to designated state forensic facilities for identification procedures.

Identification and Burial Process Underway

The identification phase has now begun, involving law enforcement investigators and forensic experts from the Ministry of Health who will conduct criminalistic examinations. Once the identities of the deceased are confirmed, the bodies will be handed over to their families for burial.

Additionally, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law concerning burial sites for those who died defending Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. This legislation was approved by the Verkhovna Rada on April 30. The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War and the Commander-in-Chief continue to address matters related to repatriation and burial of the fallen.

This event holds deep significance for the many families who have lost loved ones during the conflict. The identification and burial process ensures proper honor and support for relatives. The law signed by the President underscores the importance of commemorating the fallen while establishing a legal framework for their burial, which may help stabilize societal tensions amid the prolonged war. The ongoing work of Ukrainian authorities and international partners remains crucial for upholding justice and humanity during these difficult times.
